Protests in Rome: Statue of the Virgin Mary thrown into the street and smashed.
Rome 15/10/2011. A statue of the Virgin Mary was pulled from a church and shattered on the street. Hundreds of hooded, masked demonstrators rampaged in some of the worst violence seen in the Italian capital in years, setting cars ablaze, breaking bank and shop windows and destroying traffic lights and signposts.
